The Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) has today published 13 inspection reports on residential settings for older people. HIQA independently monitors designated centres for older people for compliance with Health Act (2017) Regulations and the National Standards for Residential Care Settings for Older People in Ireland, 2016, to ensure that residents in nursing homes are safe and well looked after.

Seven reports refer to 18-outcome announced registration inspections, three are 10-outcome inspections, two reports relate to dementia care thematic inspections and one is a follow-up inspection.

Evidence of good practice and compliance with the regulations and standards was found in nine centres. These inspections found that residents’ needs were being met in line with the requirements of the regulations and standards.

However, inspectors found evidence of non-compliance in four centres. In these centres, residents’ needs were not always met and non-compliances were identified in areas of safeguarding and safety, safe and suitable premises, governance and management, and health and safety and risk management.
