Older persons publication statement 08 November 2016
Today the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) has published 19 inspection reports on residential settings for older people. HIQA monitors designated centres for compliance with Health Act Regulations and the National Standards for Residential Care Settings for Older People in Ireland.
Eight of today’s inspection reports detail announced, 18-outcome inspections carried out to inform a registration decision. Eleven reports refer to unannounced inspections, including, three 10-outcome inspections, four thematic dementia inspections which focus on the quality of life of people with dementia, three follow-up inspections to follow up on issues of non-compliance and one single-specific-issue inspection.
Of the 19 reports published, 11 of the inspections found that, in general, the provider was ensuring a good level of compliance with the requirements of the regulations. These centres were found to be operating in compliance with the regulations and Standards.
Inspectors found evidence of non-compliance in eight centres. Residents’ needs were not always met in these centres. Areas of non-compliance included meeting residents’ health and social care needs, safeguarding residents, and providing safe and suitable premises to meet residents’ needs.
