Health technology assessment of use of an enhanced inactivated influenza vaccine for those aged 65 years and older in the HSE Seasonal Influenza Vaccination Programme
Seasonal influenza (flu) is a contagious respiratory illness that may be prevented by annual flu vaccination. In Ireland, those aged 65 years and older are eligible to receive a free annual flu vaccine through the Health Service Executive (HSE) Seasonal Influenza Vaccination Programme. Currently, a standard flu vaccine is used. Vaccine effectiveness may be reduced in some individuals due to an ageing or compromised immune system, and enhanced flu vaccines have been developed in an attempt to increase their effectiveness. The Department of Health requested that HIQA complete a health technology assessment (HTA) of using an enhanced inactivated influenza vaccine for those aged 65 years and older in the HSE Seasonal Influenza Vaccination Programme.
This assessment looked at the evidence of the effectiveness and safety of enhanced flu vaccines. It examined the cost of switching from a standard to an enhanced flu vaccine for people aged 65 years and older, and if this would be an efficient use of HSE resources. Finally it explored the organisational, social and ethical issues of providing enhanced flu vaccines to adults aged 65 years and older through the HSE Seasonal Influenza Vaccination Programme.
